The rumors were true! The Rheinländer German restaurant has indeed closed down. We will be unable to make future field trips to that location. However, the same staff is still running all of their other German restaurant locations.
It has been the tradition of local German classes for many years now to make yearly field trips to Portland, Oregon in order to get a fun, genuine, and delicious German experience. The attending students and chaperones leave during the school day by bus to go to the Edelweiss Sausage and Delicatessen store in Portland, Oregon, and in these modern times, followed by the Gustav's Restaurant in Tigard, Oregon.
The websites for the Edelweiss and Gustav's can be found below. They are definitely accessible for students and families that want to attend independently of the German class field trip. If you have questions about them, they each have wonderful, helpful managers to contact. You can also ask Herr Karte about them as well.
There is an abundance of German products available at the Edelweiss store! Chocolate, meats, cheeses, baking supplies, cooking supplies, decorations, desserts, and other various items typically found in a German supermarket. Any products purchased at this location are separate from the cost of the restaurant!
COST: Making this field trip happen does require payment for each attending student and chaperone. How do we determine the cost?
The sampler menu, which is provided for all attendees, comes with melted cheese fondue with European bread cubes, a hard roll with butter, (these have come with a delicious plum sauce in the past) chicken Schnitzel, Spätzle, Bratwurst, Sauerkraut, and to top it all off, some Apfelstrudel.
This costs $18.50 per person (any vegetarian, gluten free, or other alternates would have the same cost)
Onto that, we must add 20% gratuity and then just a tad more to help pay for the accordion player. (the fee for his accompaniment is a flat rate, so the amount changes based on how many people sign up to go)
This makes the grand total for the entire field trip about $23-$24 + any amount of money students/chaperones would like to spend at the German store.
